{"id":14181,"date":"2016-10-07T07:58:25","date_gmt":"2016-10-07T05:58:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/preprod.i4ce.org\/evenements\/workshop-energy-and-climate-collaboration-in-europe-ways-forward\/"},"modified":"2025-03-07T11:39:09","modified_gmt":"2025-03-07T10:39:09","slug":"workshop-energy-and-climate-collaboration-in-europe-ways-forward","status":"publish","type":"evenements","link":"https:\/\/www.i4ce.org\/en\/evenements\/workshop-energy-and-climate-collaboration-in-europe-ways-forward\/","title":{"rendered":"Workshop \u201cEnergy and Climate Collaboration in Europe: Ways Forward\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On 21<sup>st<\/sup> September 2016, I4CE partnered with University College London (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bartlett.ucl.ac.uk\/energy\">UCL<\/a>), the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ambafrance-uk.org\/-Science-Tech-\">French Embassy\u2019s Science and Technology Department<\/a> in the United Kingdom and the <a href=\"http:\/\/climatestrategies.org\/\">Climate Strategies<\/a> to support their workshop titled \u201c<strong><em>Energy and Climate Collaboration in Europe: Ways Forward<\/em> \u201c<\/strong> organized in London at the French Embassy.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The main areas of focus to be addressed in the workshop are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>National strategies and domestic politics: in what ways do we need our neighbours?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Does carbon pricing have a role and how might it be implemented?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Sectoral analysis: Heat, Electricity, Energy Intensive Industries<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Report backs, conclusions and ways forward<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The workshop was attended by more than 30 participants consisting of UK, French and other European researchers, industry and development partners.(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bartlett.ucl.ac.uk\/energy\/docs\/ucl-french-embassy-attendees\">Full attendee list<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The workshop<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>aimed to examine the intersection of national energy strategies in Northwestern Europe with cooperation across borders, with a particular focus on carbon pricing and sectoral strategies.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Paris Agreement set ambitious global goals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the EU submission confirmed its commitment to reduce emissions by 40% from 1990 levels by 2030; the UK government has now legislated its fifth carbon budget, with reduction 57% on similar timescale (2028-2032).<\/li>\n<li>Under the<a href=\"http:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/priorities\/energy-union-and-climate_en\">European Energy Union<\/a>, cooperation is expected to grow further. In the UK as well, trade in electricity is expanding rapidly with growing interconnection, while domestic gas (as well as oil) production from the North Sea is declining.\u00a0 The UK\u2019s EU Referendum outcome has however thrown question marks over the trend and the nature of future interdependence. At the same time, one key UK initiative \u2013 the carbon floor price \u2013 has now been joined by the French government, which has gone on to propose structural reform of the EU ETS to provide a price corridor.
