In 2019, I4<\/span>CE<\/strong> <\/span><\/span>made a commitment to<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>contribute to decarbonisation and\u00a0<\/span>carbon neutrality<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>We intend\u00a0<\/span>to<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>play our part in tackling the\u00a0<\/span>real-world<\/span>\u00a0challenges<\/span>\u00a0of\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0climate<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>transition. We have an action plan\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0that we revise each year after carrying out our annual\u00a0<\/span>assessment<\/span>\u00a0of our greenhouse gas emissions<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0Here<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0we present our 202<\/span>4<\/span>\u00a0emissions, an analysis of how it compares with\u00a0<\/span>previous years<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0and an action plan<\/span>\u00a0update<\/span><\/span>.<\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Results and analysis<\/span><\/h2>\n

The 2024\u00a0carbon footprint shows that the Institute emitted\u00a0<\/span>141<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span>tCO<\/span>2<\/span>e<\/span>, i.e. 3.4\u00a0<\/span>tCO<\/span>2<\/span>e<\/span>\u00a0per year per employee.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The most significant emission\u00a0sources\u00a0were\u00a0included in\u00a0this assessment, from\u00a0manufacturing to\u00a0the use of equipment\u00a0and\u00a0buildings, communications,\u00a0meals\u00a0and employee travel (see Figure 2). <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Each year, we\u00a0aim\u00a0to\u00a0keep\u00a0the same\u00a0set of\u00a0assumptions\u00a0to\u00a0enable us to\u00a0compare our results with those of previous years.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I4<\/span>CE<\/strong><\/span><\/b>\u2019s\u00a0greenhouse gas emissions\u00a0have\u00a0slightly decreased\u00a0over the course of a\u00a0year, from\u00a0148\u00a0tCO<\/span>2<\/span>e to 141\u00a0tCO<\/span>2<\/span>e. This 4.9%\u00a0decrease in our emissions between 2023\u00a0and 2024\u00a0can be explained\u00a0by\u00a0a decrease of\u00a0more than 10\u00a0tCO<\/span>2<\/span>e\u00a0from our international travel.\u00a0Business travel in\u00a02024 represented\u00a0similar emissions\u00a0to those of 2022\u00a0despite\u00a0an increase in the\u00a0international\u00a0team\u2019s size\u00a0(which had\u00a06\u00a0fewer\u00a0employees in\u00a02022).\u00a0Emissions per employee\u00a0decreased by 8.2%\u00a0while\u00a0the number of employees\u00a0increased\u00a0from 39\u00a0to 41 FTEs.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On the other hand,\u00a0an increase of more than\u00a011\u00a0tCO<\/span>2<\/span>e of emissions from the procurement of goods and services (including for example accommodation during business trips and work with external contractors), due to the increase in FTEs and inflation, explains why the overall decrease in I4<\/span>CE<\/strong><\/span>\u2019s<\/span><\/b>\u00a0emissions\u00a0does not reflect the level of decrease\u00a0in\u00a0emissions from business travel.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I4<\/span>CE<\/strong> <\/b>identifies\u00a0and implements ways to limit its carbon footprint: for example,\u00a041% of the team\u2019s daily meals are\u00a0in line with a\u00a0flexitarian diet,\u00a0and 51%\u00a0with a vegetarian diet.\u00a0In addition,\u00a0all meals\u00a0provided\u00a0at internal events are 100% vegetarian, thus limiting the\u00a0impact\u00a0of\u00a0employee meals\u00a0in our\u00a0greenhouse gas\u00a0footprint.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Primary source of emissions: service procurement by the Institute (95 tCO2e; 75.1%)\u202f<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

This category includes all external services required for I4<\/span>CE<\/strong>\u2019s operations, from digital licences to the graphic design required in some of our projects. To calculate this emissions source, we applied the set of monetary ratios provided by ADEME, which enables the conversion of euros spent into CO2e emitted, according to the service category. Although this method is a source of uncertainty due to its lack of granularity, it nevertheless enables us to compare our emissions very accurately from one year to the next, while maintaining the same classifications.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This source of emissions continues to increase, after an increase from 62 to 82 tCO2e between 2022 and 2023, it reaches 91 tCO2e in 2024. This increase is primarily due to the increase in the Institute\u2019s staff, and inflation, and consequently related expenses. These emissions mainly come from banking and insurance services, fees, telecommunications, and printing services.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Second source of emissions: business travel (18 tCO2e; 13%)\u202f<\/span><\/h2>\n

I4<\/span>CE<\/strong> intends to reduce the impact of its business travel by favouring online meetings and participation to events but also by incentivising train over air travel whenever an alternative exists. Air travel in I4<\/span>CE<\/strong>\u2019s footprint decreased to 13% in 2024 compared to 17.6% in 2023. The team working at the international level at I4<\/span>CE<\/strong> has in fact less participated in international events compared to the previous year. Business travel by car, as well as employee commuting continue to represent minor emissions, respectively 0.1% and 0.3%.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Third source of emissions: employee meals (11 tCO2e; 8%)\u202f<\/span><\/h2>\n

Emissions from this source were estimated on the basis of a survey on the composition of employee meals.\u202fMore than half of the team\u2019s meals are part of vegetarian diets, which has a 80% lower greenhouse gas impact than a conventional diet, according to ADEME. In addition, I4<\/span>CE<\/strong> systematically offers vegetarian meals at its internal events, while meals provided at external events feature at least one vegetarian option.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Fourth source of emissions: energy (8 tCO2e; 6%)\u202f<\/span><\/h2>\n

Heating I4<\/span>CE<\/strong>\u2019s offices with gas is the fourth largest source of emissions (5.5%). Electricity consumption to power the Institute\u2019s digital equipment represents only 0.1% of the overall carbon footprint.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Energy-related emissions are equivalent to those of 2023 overall although there is a slight decrease resulting from limited heating during the day in the offices.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Finally, regarding electricity, as I4<\/span>CE<\/strong> premises are located in a green courtyard, the Institute does not require any air conditioning during summer. Electricity-related emissions are below 0.1 tCO2e. I4<\/span>CE<\/strong> is supplied with 100% renewable energy via Enercoop.\u202f<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

<\/a>The I4<\/span>CE<\/strong> climate action plan<\/span><\/h2>\n

In 2019, I4<\/span>CE<\/strong> <\/span><\/span>made a commitment to<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>contribute to decarbonisation and\u00a0<\/span>carbon neutrality<\/span>. We intend to<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>play our part in tackling the real-world challenges<\/span>\u00a0of\u00a0<\/span>the climate\u00a0<\/span>transition. We have an action plan<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>An internal working group has been set up to carry out an annual\u00a0<\/span>assessment\u00a0<\/span>of the Institute<\/a><\/span>\u2019s greenhouse gas emissions<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>to assess our impact, thus enabling us to define an action plan to reduce our emissions.\u00a0<\/span>A<\/span>ll\u00a0<\/span>of<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>I4<\/span>CE<\/strong><\/span><\/span>\u2019s<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>actions\u00a0<\/span>in this regard are listed below.<\/span><\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

1. Transport<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. \n

    For business travel, a travel charter has been implemented: no flights within mainland France or abroad where a train alternative exists that offers a journey time of less than six hours. Some \u201clong distance\u201d travel will remain necessary for I4<\/span>CE<\/strong>\u2019s work, especially as the Institute becomes more international, but videoconferencing between international partners are already preferred, an option that is to be increasingly favoured. When travel is unavoidable, it will be optimized to minimize the number of journeys made by employees and partners, as is the case for travel to the Conference of the Parties (COP) as part of the international climate negotiations, during which the I4<\/span>CE<\/strong> team attends and organizes several workshops and conferences. In addition, to encourage team members to choose the train rather than the plane whenever possible, if a train journey results in a working day of more than 14 hours, including travel time, then the employee receives a half-day off to compensate for the time spent travelling.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  2. \n

    For commutes: the Institute encourages employees to use public transport by reimbursing Navigo cards above the legal minimum rate (75% instead of 50%). In addition, even before the adoption of the new Mobility Orientation Law (Loi d\u2019Orientation des Mobilit\u00e9s – LOM), I4<\/span>CE<\/strong> introduced a sustainable mobility package of up to \u20ac500\/year to encourage low-carbon transport such as cycling. This type of package is not yet obligatory for companies or associations. I4<\/span>CE<\/strong> also finances train commutes for long-distance teleworking employees.\u202f<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

     <\/p>\n

    2. Building \/ energy<\/strong><\/p>\n

      \n
    1. I4<\/span>CE<\/strong><\/b>\u00a0was\u00a0able to choose a renewable electricity supplier,\u00a0Enercoop,\u00a0for its current premises.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
    2. I4<\/span>CE<\/strong> <\/b>allows employees to telework in the \u00cele-de-France region or in other cities, depending on their contract. This enables the office to operate as a flexible workspace (or \u201cflex-office\u201d), i.e. facilitating the dynamic assignment of workspaces according to use, rather than assigning offices to individuals, which allows the optimal use of office space and avoids the need for a larger office. ADEME\u00a0<\/span>sets out<\/span><\/a>\u00a0a methodology\u00a0to\u00a0address\u00a0the rebound effects\u00a0of teleworking, according to which\u00a0the\u00a0flex-office\u00a0approach\u00a0more\u00a0than offsets the impact of\u00a0any\u00a0increase in the use of transport,\u00a0and the use of\u00a0any\u00a0additional\u00a0resources\u00a0required\u00a0to\u00a0work from home.\u202f<\/span> \u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

       <\/p>\n

      3. IT \/ digital \/ web<\/strong><\/p>\n

        \n
      1. The Institute\u2019s IT equipment consists entirely of reconditioned computers. I4<\/span>CE<\/strong> <\/b><\/span>also favours the repair of IT equipment, rather than replacement, whenever possible. <\/span><\/li>\n
      2. Since 2022, I4<\/span>CE<\/strong> <\/b><\/span>has also\u00a0purchased\u00a0reconditioned phones for its employees, giving them the\u00a0option\u00a0of using a work phone in addition to a personal\u00a0one,\u00a0or\u00a0to use\u00a0a dual sim phone to avoid having\u00a0multiple\u00a0phones.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

         <\/p>\n

        4. Service providers<\/strong><\/p>\n

        W<\/span>herever possible<\/span>,<\/span><\/span> I4<\/span>CE<\/strong> <\/span><\/span>supports<\/span>\u00a0service pr<\/span><\/span>oviders with environmental and social\u00a0<\/span>commitments<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

          \n
        1. Office cleaning: I4<\/span>CE<\/strong> <\/b><\/span>has chosen a cleaning service provider with ISO 140017\u00a0environmental certification<\/a> and AFAQ EI8\u00a0social certification<\/a>. The cleaning products used are not harmful to the environment and waste is sorted\u00a0daily.\u202f\u202f<\/span>\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
        2. Caterers: meals for internal events are 100% vegetarian. Meals for I4<\/span>CE<\/strong><\/b><\/span>-organized external events always offer at least one vegetarian option.<\/span><\/li>\n
        3. Printing: for many years I4<\/span>CE<\/strong> <\/b><\/span>has worked with an Imprim\u2019vert<\/a> certified company. This eco-label is awarded to printers who work to reduce the environmental impact of their activities. In addition, the Institute is committed to a just-in-time printing approach, which limits printing to only that which is strictly necessary. In addition, all I4<\/span>CE<\/strong> <\/b><\/span>publications are available on the Institute\u2019s website and can be consulted online.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

           <\/p>\n

           <\/p>\n

          5. Contribution to the national climate effort<\/strong><\/p>\n

          Despite\u00a0all\u00a0our efforts,\u00a0today and tomorrow, I4<\/span>CE<\/strong><\/b>‘s <\/span>impact on climate\u00a0will never be zero. Reducing our emissions is the priority,\u00a0\u201cdeep decarbonization\u201d\u00a0is the\u00a0objective, but\u00a0the reality is that we\u00a0continue to\u00a0emit and\u00a0will\u00a0have\u00a0unavoidable\u00a0emissions in\u00a0the\u00a0future.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

          Changes in agricultural and forestry practices\u00a0can be implemented\u00a0for carbon sequestration\u00a0today and in the coming decades.\u00a0Financing these projects\u00a0allows responding\u00a0to the climate urgency\u00a0while bringing other co-benefits\u00a0(e.g. biodiversity, local economy).\u00a0The Institute\u00a0is therefore committed to contributing to the global effort\u00a0of carbon neutrality\u00a0by financing certified projects on French soil that are\u00a0commensurate\u00a0with its emissions.\u00a0To\u00a0this end\u00a0the Institute\u00a0uses the\u00a0<\/span>Label Bas Carbone<\/span><\/a> (low-carbon label).
