{"id":20911,"date":"2018-06-21T08:27:28","date_gmt":"2018-06-21T06:27:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/preprod.i4ce.org\/2018\/06\/21\/i4ce-e3g-host-breakfast-meeting-to-push-ambition-on-sustainable-finance\/"},"modified":"2022-08-12T14:22:25","modified_gmt":"2022-08-12T12:22:25","slug":"i4ce-e3g-breakfast-sustainable-finance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.i4ce.org\/en\/i4ce-e3g-breakfast-sustainable-finance\/","title":{"rendered":"I4CE &#038; E3G host breakfast meeting to push ambition on sustainable finance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.e3g.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">E3G<\/a> &#8211; Third Generation Environmentalism in partnership with the <a href=\"https:\/\/ue.delegfrance.org\/\">Permanent Representation of France to the European Union <\/a>held\u00a0a breakfast meeting to discuss the\u00a0following issue :<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>How the EU can mobilise sufficient capital to meet the needs of a sustainable economy, building on that proposed in the European Commission\u2019s Action Plan on Financing Sustainable Growth and the EU Budget post-2020 ?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This invitation-only meeting held under Chatham House rules brought together a select group of MEPs, EU Commission representatives, financial sector actors, and think tanks.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>I<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">4<\/span>CE<\/strong> presented lessons for the EU on <strong>how the \u201cgreening\u201d of the bond market demonstrates current obstacles to redirecting investment and finance and why a holistic tracking of financial flows supporting climate investment is needed to understand what policy and market levers are efficient towards this goal.<\/strong> This drew on <strong>I<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">4<\/span>CE<\/strong> recent publications on green bonds (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.i4ce.org\/go_project\/financial-institutions-instruments-lccr-transition\/green-bonds-and-the-financing-of-the-energy-transition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">available here<\/a>) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.i4ce.org\/download\/landscape-of-climate-finance-in-france-2017-edition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2017 French Landscape of Climate Finance report<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">From <strong>I<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">4<\/span>CE<\/strong>&#8216;s perspective, three key messages from our research were addressed :<\/p>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><b>Commission\u2019s Action Plan<\/b> and legislative proposal must be seen in light of: <i>\u00ab\u00a0greening\u00a0\u00bb the financial sector, without generating a new pipeline of investments, will not necessarily contribute to achieving climate objectives<\/i>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li><b>Financial instruments<\/b>, such as green bonds, have important <b>\u00ab\u00a0informational\u00a0\u00bb roles to play, <\/b>however an ESG checklist approach to labeling is not appropriate to ensure \u2018climate-coherence\u2019 (not to mention \u2018Paris\u2019).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<li>A <b>holistic approach is needed to thinking about investment <\/b>\u2013 and how it is financed \u2013 to understand how the financial system can support the low-carbon resilient real economy. <strong>I<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">4<\/span>CE<\/strong> has piloted an approach in France to assist in doing this.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>I<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">4<\/span>CE<\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.e3g.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">E3G<\/a> will continue the discussion started at this event.
