Overview of I4CE

The Institute for Climate Economics (I4CE) is a Paris-based think tank with expertise in economics and finance with the mission to support action against climate change.

Through its applied research, the Institute contributes to the debate on climate-related policies. It also publishes research to support financial institutions, businesses and local territories in the fight against climate change.

I4CE is a registered non-profit organization, which was founded in 2015 by the French National Promotional Bank Caisse des Dépôts and the French Development Agency (AFD). Our research is made public, and we aim for full transparency on the methods, sources and assumptions underlying our results.

The Institute consists of a team of 34 people and has a budget of around 3 million euros.

About the position:

You will join a team of highly motivated researchers committed to projects aimed at informing public decision-making regarding the implementation of the low-carbon transition. These projects cover the development of analyses and innovative tools in order to inform the debates around the following themes:

  • The climate investment gap;
  • The adequacy of public policies with national climate objectives;
  • How to finance the low-carbon transition.

You will be involved in projects with a strong international dimension, especially projects in collaboration with international partners aimed at sharing, disseminating and improving the methods and tools developed by I4CE in the French context. These tools include for instance green budgeting and taxation, climate investment landscapes, ex ante evaluation tools of public policies supporting the low-carbon transition, etc.

Role and Responsibilities:

The candidate will be expected to support and contribute to the development of research activities on the topics listed above, either in multilateral forums or in direct partnership with countries (especially developing countries).

The position is for a person with a Master or PhD degree and 5-10 years of professional experience.

This position requires a strong knowledge of economic issues related to the low-carbon transition as well as expertise in economic analysis. Experience in a research organization, a think tank specialized in economics and/or climate, or a Ministry of Finance or Environment is desirable.

The specific skills and motivations expected are as follows:

  • Strong motivation to work on economic issues related to the implementation of the low carbon transition in international contexts.
  • Excellent research and writing skills:
    • Ability to propose innovative and relevant research questions;
    • Ability to conceptualize research problems and design methodological frameworks;
    • Ability to apply advanced methods and undertake rigorous research;
    • Ability to produce high quality research results in formats suitable for the target audience;
    • Ability to promote research projects
    • Strong autonomy and very good project management skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in international environments:
    • Development of funding requests and partnership proposals with international organizations and donors;
    • Ability to develop, implement and adapt a work program according to the international agenda;
    • Ability to make presentations and interact in English with high-level experts.
  • The desire to contribute to the development of the team’s strategy (strategic axes, work program, etc.).

A perfect command of spoken and written English is essential, knowledge of French and/or another language such as Spanish is appreciated. Long experience (1 year or more) living and working abroad is a plus.

Additional Information:

I4CE is located in Paris in the 6th district. Candidates with exceptional profiles not based in Paris may be considered.

START DATE: Late August / September 2022.

STATUS: 1-year contract with the possibility of being offered a permanent contract upon completion.

REMUNERATION: commensurate with the level of experience.
