About the event

Over the past two years, an international consortium co-led by the Institute for Climate Economics (I4CE) and the Frankfurt School of Finance & Management has developed the G20 Sustainable Finance Progress (SFP) Framework to better understand how and where countries are making progress on sustainable finance.

The SFP Framework proposes an integrated, bottom-up and context-sensitive approach to tracking progress at country level. Rather than looking at individual policies or financial flows in isolation, it provides a structured view of national action across the sustainable finance policy landscape—covering financial strategy, fiscal policy and public finance, monetary policy and central-bank operations, and financial policy and regulation, alongside available evidence on financial outcomes.

The framework aims to support a common understanding of where countries stand on sustainable finance while recognising differences in national circumstances, institutional arrangements and policy pathways. Its development has combined a review of existing tracking approaches with extensive engagement with experts and policymakers and practical testing through country pilots in Brazil, France, Germany, Indonesia and South Africa.

The publication of the working paper marks an important milestone, but the SFP Framework remains deliberately “a framework in the making”. The webinar will therefore be an opportunity both to share what has been learned so far and to discuss how the framework can be strengthened and further developed. We will be sharing plans for the next phase, including on the next round of pilot countries and the full G20 assessment that will take place in 2027, to be launched in the lead-up to the UK G20 Summit.

What will we discuss?

The webinar will:

  • introduce the SFP Framework, its rationale and its contribution to existing sustainable finance tracking efforts;
  • share practical insights from applying the framework in Brazil, France, Germany, Indonesia and South Africa;
  • explore methodological, institutional and data-related lessons emerging from the first phase of development and piloting; and
  • look ahead to the next phase of the SFP initiative, including priorities for further development and testing and how the framework can remain relevant across diverse country contexts.
  • include short reflections from the five country pilots, followed by a moderated discussion and audience Q&A on the future development and potential uses of the framework.

Who should attend?

The webinar is intended for policymakers, public financial institutions, international organisations, sustainable finance practitioners, researchers and other experts interested in sustainable finance policy, implementation and monitoring.

It will be particularly relevant for representatives of Ministries of Finance, central banks, financial regulators and supervisors, public development banks and other public financial institutions, international and multilateral organisations, G20 sustainable finance processes and related initiatives, as well as research institutions, academia and think tanks.

We welcome both those who have contributed to the development and piloting of the SFP Framework and those encountering the initiative for the first time.
