CAFAMORE

20 October 2025

The main objective of the CAFAMORE project is to accelerate the implementation of carbon farming practices in Europe by developing the digital infrastructure, tools, and knowledge for credible and robust monitoring, reporting, and verification (MRV). CAFAMORE supports the European Carbon Removals and Carbon Farming Regulation (CRCF).

CAFAMORE is developing a EU-wide parcel-level monitoring approach for carbon farming. It aims to harmonize and automate data collection, quantification methods, and baseline scenario development, while establishing a spatially explicit registry and identifying effective business models for a sustainable Carbon Farming economy.

I4CE is involved in developing public policies that encourage carbon farming financing in Europe.

Together with its partners Agrosolutions and Ecologic Institute, I4CE is conducting an in-depth analysis of carbon farming financing in Europe. The aim is to assess the potential of the carbon farming market, evaluate enablers and barriers, and build economic models for farmers.

I4CE is specifically responsible for the following tasks:

  • mapping the current carbon farming market, its players, and key public policies and standards;
  • quantitatively assessing current and future financing for carbon farming practices in Europe. The potential of the main sources of public and private funding will be assessed: subsidies, the voluntary carbon market, regulatory markets, funding linked to the decarbonization of value chains, etc.

Public policy recommendations will be formulated to ensure the existence of an effective, results-based financing system that is attractive to farmers and allows different sources of funding to be combined.

I4CE is also responsible for coordinating a working-group of stakeholders (project developers, standards, agro-industries, decision-makers, etc.) on the links between markets and public policy involved in carbon farming issues, whose shared experience will contribute to the work of CAFAMORE.

CAFAMORE is funded by the European Union through the Horizon Europe program and contributes to the implementation of the European mission A Soil Deal for Europe (Mission Soil).

The project was launched in July 2025 for a period of four years and brings together 22 partners across Europe.
